Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic hold a taste of the entire United States in one compact mouthful. Home to monumental cities and mountain wilderness, ocean surf and piedmont farmlands, the Mid-Atlantic celebrates the full record of our nation's history, from the earliest Native Americans and Colonial explorers, through the founding of the nation's Capital, to today's position as a focus of world politics.
Within four hours' drive on a network of Interstate and connecting roads, you can attend a session of Congress, hike the Appalachian Trail, feel solemn winds scour a dozen historic battlegrounds, shop fashionable downtown stores, or drift a primeval river meandering to the incomparable Chesapeake Bay. The easy travel and short distances enable you to visit many attractions in a relatively short time.
The Mid-Atlantic's diversity demands careful exploration. Start with the obvious: Howard County's rural countryside, Washington, DC, the Nation's capitol, or Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Then look deeper. Stroll Ellicott City's winding streets, ride on the Eastern Shore's venerable Oxford Ferry, or take a barge cruise along Washington's C&O Canal. Tour Maryland's surprising wineries. Join an ethnic festival, country fair, or fireman's carnival, or watch a jousting tourney, steeplechase, or polo match.
With a reputation as "America in miniature," even the Mid-Atlantic's geography offers variety. Fronting the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the blue-hazed Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains to the west, outdoor enthusiasts find a complete palette of Nature's beauty. Though small in size, Howard County and the Mid-Atlantic stand large in possibilities.
